While I agree that the use of chemical weapons on its citizens in Syria is deplorable, I cannot help wondering why we are so quick to help the rebels who are trying to overthrow President Assad’s regime in Syria.  Truth be told, many of these same rebels are part of al Qaeda and are as anti-American as they come.  Why then would we help anybody whose goals include killing Americans and attempting to destroy our country?

Case in point:

The extremism of some armed factions battling to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Assad’s regime, can be seen on their Facebook page of an incendiary illustration of masked Islamic fighters marching through Washington, D.C., as the U.S. Capitol burns in the background.

The image is one of eight photos posted on the official Facebook page of the “Al-Aqsa Islamic Brigades,” a small armed Sunni rebel faction fighting with the Free Syrian Army, the main umbrella military organization of the opposition forces.  Two other photos posted on the group’s page feature the widely recognized black flag of the al Qaeda in Iraq terrorist group, which operates freely in Syria.

Al-Aqsa has not been designated as a terrorist group by the United States.  It fights alongside another Free Syrian Army force, the Tawhid Brigade, that has been linked to Jabhat al-Nusra, one of two rebel factions which also has been labeled terrorist groups by the U.S. government.  This proves that the interests of the Syrian rebels, is not the same interests as the United States.

Such murky alliances and rivalries within the Free Syrian Army help explain the skepticism that greeted U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday when he told members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee that “bad guys” – Islamic extremists – constitute “maybe 15 to 25 percent” of the opposition forces.

Several lawmakers questioned Kerry’s assertion and senior military officials believe that the actual percentage is way higher than that.  Defense officials estimate that al Qaeda and related extremists groups now constitute “more than 50 percent” of the rebel force, which is made up of at least 70 different factions, “and it’s growing by the day.

While details of the Al-Aqsa Islamic Brigades leadership and goals are unclear, the group makes no secret of its Islamist orientation and general antipathy for the West.  In late February, the group issued a report lambasting “the role of Western Crusader intelligence in the Syrian revolution.”

When are we going to learn to stay out of other countries and stop providing foreign aid?  If you go back in history, it was not too long ago that President Assad was fully supported by this country and helped him stay in power.  But, now we are going to help Islamic extremists over throw him by providing weapons and aid.  The shame of this is the fact that we are knowingly helping those people who if given the chance would like to overthrow this country also.  When Americans are dying in the streets of this country…whom do we blame then?
